     Source files can contain any printable characters in the ASCII
     character set. The collating sequence for the FORTRAN character
     set is the ASCII sequence.
 
     FORTRAN statements are case independent, but character constants are
     case sensitive. For example, the following two statements are the
     same:
 
          WRITE(*,*)
          write(*,*)
 
     The following two constants, however, are different:
 
          ABC
          abc
