Format The layout and appearance of text on a page. In Word, a format can derive from both direct formatting and the application of styles. Direct formatting is the result of applying styles with the Format commands or speed formatting keys; in a style sheet, formatting instructions determine how to format document text. The three types of formats are character formats (font and point size), paragraph formats (alignment and spacing), and section formats (overall page design).
