Help for Microsoft QuickHelp (qh.hlp) (
Topic list)
Important Notice
The pages on this site contain documentation for very old MS-DOS software,
purely for historical purposes.
If you're looking for up-to-date documentation, particularly for programming,
you should not rely on the information found here, as it will be woefully
out of date.

.category string-number
When the user presses T or selects Table of Contents from the QuickHelp View
menu, QuickHelp searches the current topic for a .category command. If the
search is successful, QuickHelp uses the text following the .category
command as a search topic. If the topic name is found and it is a list
topic, QuickHelp displays it so that the line number specified in the
.category command appears in the middle of the screen. If no line number is
specified, QuickHelp will search the entire list topic for a topic name that
matches the name of the topic being viewed when T was pressed. If found, the
line containing that topic name will be highlighted. If the topic found is
not a list topic, QuickHelp will display it, but will ignore any line
positioning information in the .category command.
The .category command is typically used when the name of the current topic
belongs to a list of topic names. For example, in the MS OS/2 QuickHelp
databases, each function description includes a .category command that
points to a list of all functions to which the topic belongs to.
Note that in the absence of a .category command, QuickHelp will search for a
topic called "h.contents" in the current database.
Example
In the following example, if the user presses T while viewing the KbdXlate
topic, QuickHelp will search for the Kbd topic, and highlight line 16.
.context KbdXlate
.category Kbd 16
.context, .freeze, .list, .paste, .popup, .ref, .topic
