The pages on this site contain documentation for very old MS-DOS software,
purely for historical purposes.
If you're looking for up-to-date documentation, particularly for programming,
you should not rely on the information found here, as it will be woefully

FILE PRINT MERGE
Procedures: <Merging files>
Use the File Print Merge command to print
customized versions of a document by combining
the text of a <main document> with text from
a <data document>.
■ When you use the File Print Merge command to
create a new document, a file is created that
contains complete documents for each data
record.
■ A <field> name can contain as many as 64
characters, in any combination of upper- and
lowercase letters and numbers. The first
character must be a letter.
■ A field name cannot contain spaces, hyphens,
periods, or any punctuation mark other than
an underscore.
■ The character used to separate fields must not
match the character that displays in the Decimal
box of the Utilities Customize dialog box. If
you have specified a comma as the decimal
character, use a semicolon or tab character to
separate fields in both the <header record> and
data records.
■ To format text from the data document, format
the first letter of the field name in the main
document.
■ The maximum number of fields in the header is
256.
■ The maximum number of nested INCLUDE
instructions is 64.
